Star Wars: The Last Jedi novel begins with a line about Luke Skywalker’s wife

February 25, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Since Disney and Lucasfilm decided to ditch the Expanded Universe in favour of a new Star Wars canon, we’ve seen several aspects of the old EU make its way into the new Disney continuity (see Grand Admiral Thrawn, the New Republic / New Jedi Order, Tag & Bink etc.).

Recently, Lucasfilm Story Group’s Leland Chee teased the introduction of more ‘Legends’ characters into canon, and a leaked copy of the opening page of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi novel seems to indicate that one of those could be Mara Jade, the fan-favourite character and wife to Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. Here’s the opening line, via Reddit…

Unfortunately for Mara Jade fans, what has become clear since the news started spreading like wildfire across the internet yesterday is that the opening line of the novel actually refers to a dream sequence, where Luke is imagining what his life would have been like had he resisted Obi-Wan Kenobi’s offer to travel to Alderaan, stayed on Tatooine and not gotten involved.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Luke Skywalker didn’t have a wife between the events of Return of the Jedi and the Sequel Trilogy (given how grumpy he is in The Last Jedi, you couldn’t blame her for not sticking around!), but it’s certainly not confirmed in the novelisation.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) as Vice Admiral Holdo.
