Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Andy Serkis discusses Supreme Leader Snoke and his motivations

November 23, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Having only made the briefest of appearances via hologram in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, December’s hotly-anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to feature an expanded role for the saga’s latest villain, Supreme Leader Snoke.

While director Rian Johnson has warned us not to expect any major reveals and that his past will remain a mystery in Episode VIII, actor Andy Serkis has been chatting to EW about his character, giving us a little insight into his backstory.

“The thing about Snoke is that he is extremely strong with the Force, the dark side of the Force. He’s terribly powerful, of course. But he is also a very vulnerable and wounded character,” said Serkis. “He has suffered and he has suffered injury. The way that his malevolence comes out is in reaction to that. His hatred of the Resistance is fueled by what’s happened to him personally.”

So, does that mean the Resistance is responsible for Snoke’s injuries? Has he suffered these after turning Ben Solo to the Dark Side? Or is he perhaps holding them responsible for the Rebellion’s actions?

Serkis also went on to discuss Snoke’s relationship with Kylo Ren, hinting at some tension between the two Dark Side users: “His training of Kylo Ren is not yielding what he wants. Therefore his anger towards Kylo Ren is intensified because he can’t bear weakness in others. Part of the manipulation is goading him with Hux and playing them off against each other.”

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the States and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, and Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
