Star Wars: The Force Awakens tipped for $3 billion box office

December 23, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already shattered a host of box office records, including the biggest opening weekend of all time, with the film currently sitting on $610 million worldwide after just a few days on release.

But will it have enough in the tank to smash the record, overtaking the $2.78 billion haul of James Cameron’s Avatar to become the highest-grossing movie of all time? Well, senior Rentrak analyst Paul Dergarabedian seems to think so, suggesting to The Wrap that it could become the first movie to pass $3 billion in global receipts.

“Are we looking at the first $3 billion movie ever? If any film can do it, it’s this one. I could certainly see it landing north of $200 million this weekend. This is all uncharted territory, but you look at what Avatar and Titanic did in their second weekends and you have to think, why not? This was a unique situation with so many people wanting it to be better than the prequels, and it delivered, and these numbers were the result. I don’t see anything topping this, not even Star Wars: Episode VIII.”
