Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Oscar Isaac stresses that Poe Dameron is not the next Han Solo

November 16, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Star Wars: The Force Awakens caught a lot of flack for feeling like a retread of A New Hope. Poe Dameron, for example, is a handsome, wisecracking, crack shot pilot in a leather jacket. Sound familiar? Well, Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac wants to make clear that he doesn’t think that his character is a second-coming of Han Solo. Chatting with Esquire, the actor describes Rian Johnson’s desire to have Poe Dameron’s character serve the main plot in Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

“Well, there could be [an opening for a Han-like character], but I think what [The Last Jedi director] Rian [Johnson] did was make it less about filling a slot and more about what the story needs. The fact is now that the Resistance has been whittled to just a handful of people, they’re running for their lives, and Leia is grooming me — him — to be a leader of the Resistance, as opposed to a dashing, rogue hero.”

It won’t be long before we can finally feast our eyes on Star Wars: The Last Jedi (and its many, many porgs). Given the fact that Rian Johnson has been tapped for a brand-new trilogy, it would seem that Lucasfilm has an awful lot of confidence in the director’s upcoming work. Perhaps we should start getting excited for this one.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the States and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, and Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
