After acquiring the rights to the MGM library back in 2022, Amazon is getting ready to step back through the Stargate with Variety reporting that Marvel’s WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer is developing a new series adaptation of the 1994 sci-fi movie and its subsequent small screen spinoffs.
Directed by Roland Emmerich from a script by Dean Devlin, the original Stargate movie revolved around an ancient device that created a wormhole between Earth and a distant planet reminiscent of Ancient Egypt. Starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, the film was a smash hit at the box office and launched a franchise that included the subsequent TV spinoffs Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe.
This new potential Stargate series marks Amazon’s second attempt at relaunching the franchise, with Stargate Atlantis’ Martin Gero previously attached to a potential revival of the TV universe. While details are scarce, it has been reported that Schaeffer will executive produce this new take alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi) on behalf Safehouse Pictures, and a writers’ room expected to open in the near future.
The Stargate series continues Amazon’s efforts to mine the MGM catalogue, and follows on from the likes of the Legally Blonde prequel series Elle and the upcoming RoboCop reboot, which was recently announced with Dan Stevens in the title role as Alex Murphy.
