Superman: Red Son, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War and Superman: Man of Tomorrow animated movies announced at Comic-Con

July 20, 2019 by Gary Collinson

During yesterday’s world premiere of Batman: Hush at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced its DC Universe Animated Original Movie plans for 2020, which includes the previously rumoured adaptation of Superman: Red Son as well as the original features Justice League Dark: Apokolips War and Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

Based on the Mark Millar penned Elseworlds comic, Red Son reimagines the Man of Steel, with Baby Kal-El crash landing in the Soviet Union as opposed to Kansas, where he is raised as a Soviet symbol as “the Champion of the common worker who fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact.”

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War will serve as a sequel to 2017’s Justice League Dark movie, while Superman: Man of Tomorrow is described as “a fully original story featuring a young Superman early in his career.”

Notably, 2020 will mark the first year that WB isn’t releasing a Batman-headlined animated movie since 2007 (the year the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line launched with Superman: Doomsday). There is however the DC Showcase “long-form animated short” adaptation of the classic Batman: Death in the Family, which is expected to be released late in the year.

What do you make of DC’s animated line-up for 2020? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
