Sylvester Stallone to star in dark superhero movie Samaritan for MGM

February 21, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Last year, action icon Sylvester Stallone launched Balboa Productions, announcing several projects including the superhero movie Samaritan, and now comes word that MGM has snapped up the package in a competitive bidding situation.

Described as “a dark, fresh take on the superhero genre”, Samaritan has been scripted by Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room) and revolves around a boy who discovers that a missing superhero may still be alive some twenty years after they disappeared in battle.

Stallone is attached to star in Samaritan, as well as producing the film with Balboa’s Braden Aftergood. The project marks the second collaboration between MGM and Balboa following an upcoming biopic on legendary boxer Jack Johnson.

In addition to Samaritan, Balboa Productions also has two other projects in development: Hunter, an adaptation of James Byron Huggins 2009 novel about tracker who is hired to hunt down a genetically-engineered beast wreaking havoc on civilisation (which Stallone originally envisioned as a possible Rambo movie); and an adaptation of FBI veteran Michael McGowan’s memoir Ghost: My Thirty Years as an FBI Undercover Agent.
