The director of Deadpool 2 explains how the Juggernaut was brought to life

May 31, 2018 by Samuel Brace

David Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2, explains how the villainous the Juggernaut was created for the film.

The appearance of the Juggernaut in Deadpool 2 certainly surprised some and his presence was actually one of the most challenging aspects of the movie according to the film’s director.

The Juggernaut was an entirely CGI creation and was actually voiced by Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds. There were stuntmen on set filling in for the character to help with the other actors but apart from that he was a post-production creation.

Speaking to ComicBook.com about what was involved in bringing the Juggernaut to life, David Leitch said: “We had somebody in a gray suit, you know, performance capture, but we weren’t recording. It was only for a reference on film. We weren’t recording mo-cap. He’s completely animated and so, we just thought, because his geometry, he’s so tall, getting performance capture onset for his physicality wasn’t effective. If it was going to be an actor where we saw his face, we would probably have done a face rig, but it wasn’t that situation. So, we had different stunt performers at different times play him as reference, but it was never a mo-cap situation.

“I’ll say this though, for the fight scene at the end with Colossus, we did do mo-cap reference, and so we had a smaller stunt performer — maybe like, 5′ 7″ — fighting a guy who’s 6′ 4″, 6′ 5″, and tried to get more proportions right,” Leitch said. “And we did the fight scene in mo-cap and put cameras on it. And it was still just a reference for the animators, it was really some great animation done by Framestore that pulled us over the finish line.”

Were you happy with the Juggernaut’s appearance in the film and do you think the work done by Leitch and the animators did the character justice?

Marvel’s motormouth mercenary is back! Bigger, better and occasionally more pantless than ever before. When a super soldier arrives on a murderous mission, Deadpool is forced to think about friendship, family and what it really means to be a hero – all while kicking 50 shades of ass. Because, sometimes, to do the right thing you need to fight dirty.

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Bedlam, Lewis Tan (Iron Fist) as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgard (It) as Zeitgeist, Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as Russell, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as the film’s villain, Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider) as Yukio and Eddie Marsan (Atomic Blonde) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
