The Fate of the Furious crosses $1 billion worldwide

April 30, 2017 by Gary Collinson

After shooting out of the blocks with the biggest worldwide opening of all time, Universal’s The Fate of the Furious crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office on Saturday, becoming the second film of 2017 to do so after Beauty and the Beast, and the thirtieth film in history to hit the milestone.

The Fate of the Furious has grossed $1.060 billion so far, making it the second highest-grossing instalment of the franchise after 2015’s Furious 7, which grossed $1.516 billion. In the coming weeks it will likely overtake Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (currently on $1.143 billion) to become the biggest earner of the year so far.

Universal has already set Fast & Furious 9 for release on April 19th 2019, followed by Fast & Furious 10 on April 2nd 2021, while it has been reported that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will also headline their own spinoff film.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.
