The Legend of Zelda director planning “serious” and “fun” live-action movie adaptation

March 25, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Announced back in November, Sony Pictures partnered with Nintendo to bring The Legend of Zelda to the big screen.

Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) will direct the live-action adaptation of the iconic video game series. He has now revealed his mindset for the film, calling the project “serious” as well as “whimsical.”

In a recent conversation with Game Radar via Total Film, Ball discussed how “cool” it would be to make this film and said he would make fans very happy with what he’s cooking up.

“I have this awesome idea,” Ball tells the outlet. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time of how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

“That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool but fun and whimsical.”

The Legend of Zelda video game franchise is a massive deal with gamers; the series has sold over 150 million copies, and the recent outing, Tears of the Kingdom, was among the best-selling games in 2023.
