The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power sets all-female directing team for season 2

December 16, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Prime Video has announced that directors Charlotte Brändström (The Witcher), Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time) and Louise Hooper (The Sandman) are set to take charge of the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, with the trio directing multiple episodes apiece across season two’s eight episodes.

Brändström, who directed two highly acclaimed episodes of The Rings of Power’s first season in ‘Udûn’ and ‘The Eye’, will direct four episodes, as well as serving as co-executive producer on the season, while Hamri and Hooper will direct two each. Filming is now underway in the UK.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay continue to serve as showrunners and executive producers for the second season of the series, which takes place thousands of years prior to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, during the Second Age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

The Rings of Power has been aggressively adding to its cast in recent weeks, with the likes of Sam Hazeldine (Peaky Blinders), Gabriel Akuwudike (Hanna), Yasen “Zates” Atour (The Witcher), Ben Daniels (Jupiter’s Legacy), Nia Towle (Persuasion), Nicholas Woodeson (Silent Witness), Oliver Alvin-Wilson (The Bay), Stuart Bowman (The Pact), Gavi Singh Chera (The Undeclared War), William Chubb (Vampire Academy), Kevin Eldon (Game of Thrones), Will Keen (Ridley Road), Selina Lo (Boss Level), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton). and newcomer Amelia Kenworthy all heading to Middle-earth for season two.

Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream now on Prime Video.
