The Matrix Resurrections secures lucrative China release

November 23, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

It appears that The Matrix Resurrections has achieved something that few Hollywood movies have been able to do in 2021, and that’s convince the lucrative market of China to swallow the red pill and allow the fourth installment of the science-fiction franchise a theatrical release.

According to The Hollywood Reporter The Matrix Resurrections has cleared censorship, but not yet been given an exact release date.

This is a big deal because no major Hollywood title has secured a release for the last two months of 2021, and even though Dune and No Time to Die have been granted an extension to their truncated release windows, their appeal is waning in the world’s largest theatrical market, one that could be yearning for more pre-pandemic level Hollywood product.

The Matrix is especially popular in China, despite The Matrix Revolutions being the only entry to receive a theatrical release back in 2003, where it was the first Hollywood film to get a day-and-date release at the same time as the Western territories.

Twenty years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. The Matrix remains in the zeitgeist as a film that has changed the way we look at cinema and reality itself. With its game-changing action and visual effects, The Matrix helped pave the way for films to follow.”

The Matrix Resurrections reunites director Lana Wachowski with original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Jessica Henwick (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter), Neil Patrick Harris (Gone Girl), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico), Christina Ricci (The Addams Family), Telma Hopkins (Dead to Me), Eréndira Ibarra (Sense8), Toby Onwumere (Empire), Max Riemelt (Sense8), Brian J. Smith (Treadstone), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Angel Has Fallen).

The Matrix Resurrections is set for release on December 22nd 2021.
