The Meg 2 CinemaCon footage featured Jason Statham fighting a shark with a sword

April 26, 2023 by EJ Moreno

As the powerhouse filmmaker Ben Wheatley steps into the director’s chair for Meg 2: The Trench, we see the ante upped for the sequel.

Teased at CinemaCon as part of the Warner Bros. Discovery showcase, fans and theatre owners were lucky enough to get a brand-new look at the sequel, and it’s rumored to be one of the most insane shark films yet.

According to The Wrap, the teased clip offered a detailed look at the new shark film. The clip starts with a title card saying, “For 65 million years, one species ruled the world,” followed by our titular Megalodon eating a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Then we cut to the present day following Jason Statham’s character, and we’ll let the outlet explain it best.

The Wrap reports: “Deep underwater, the team starts getting picked off by the biggest Meg anyone has ever seen. We then get various monsters attacking by land and by sea, with Statham almost getting eaten by a shark. We get more scenes of tourists almost getting eaten and a tentacled creature eating a helicopter. The teaser ends with Statham leaping into the air on a jet ski to face off against a shark with a sword.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Statham will fight a shark with a sword in Meg 2: The Trench. For fans who wanted a bit more camp and abursdity out of the first Meg movie, you get your wish. And prepare for multiple Megs, as reports say the film will see more than one monstrous shark.

Cliff Curtis, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, and Sergio Peris-Mencheta co-star in the film, written by Dean Georgaris and Jon & Erich Hoeber.
