The Naked Gun reboot “won’t be that kind of spoof”, says original director David Zucker

March 12, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Remakes. They are all the rage these days, and as time moves forward, many films close to the hearts of different generations of film lovers are come onto the radar for the remake/reboot/reset treatment.

Last year, news broke that classic comedy spoof The Naked Gun (From The Files of Police Squad! of course) would be given a new 21st century makeover, with The Hangover star Ed Helms to take over as the new leading man from the legendary Leslie Nielsen.

Many have reacted negatively to the thought of the new version, and this week Empire spoke to original director and co-writer of the films David Zucker, who has added to the reactions by telling the magazine that Naked Gun 2016 will be a very different beast.

“It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did,” he said, speaking to the magazine at a screening of Airplane in Nashville. “It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do.”

Zucker also commented on the Ed Helms casting, saying: “[He’s] very well known for three of the biggest comedies ever. I understand why Paramount is doing what they’re doing.”

In addition, Zucker has apparently turned down a producer credit too: “If my name was on it, I would be making all sorts of suggestions and trying to change it, and it would be frustrating”.

Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (Night at the Museum) have written the script for the new version. An official release date is yet to be announced.

What do you think of the news that the new Naked Gun won’t be a spoof like the original? Is the project a good idea? Leave us your thoughts in the comments section below…
