The New Mutants co-creator slams the X-Men spinoff for white-washing and misspelling his name

August 30, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Having gathered dust for a couple of years on 20th Century Fox’s shelf, the studio’s final X-Men movie The New Mutants finally saw the light of day this weekend courtesy of Disney, and perhaps rather unsurprisingly the movie isn’t exactly setting the world alight.

It’s been met with a mixed response from fans (to put it politely), and been absolutely mauled by critics (although our man Tom Beasley rather enjoyed it – read his ★★★★ here). And now comic book artist Bob McLeod – co-creator of New Mutants – has expressed his disappointment in the movie, criticising it for white-washing the character of Sunspot, and for even misspelling his name in the credits!

“I was very excited when I heard they were making a New Mutants movie,” wrote McLeod on Facebook. “I thought making it into a horror movie was perhaps an interesting idea, but not at all how the characters should be introduced to the public at large. But, hey, my characters in a movie! I never would have thought that would actually happen. But then, I was disappointed when they didn’t give Dani braids, although I like Blu Hunt. I was disappointed when Rahne wasn’t a redhead with spiky hair, although I adore Maisie Williams. I was disappointed that Sam isn’t tall and gawky, although I do like Charlie Heaton. But mainly I was very disappointed that Roberto isn’t short and dark-skinned. Yet another example of Hollywood white-washing. There’s just no excuse. So basically, Josh Boone erased everything I contributed to the way the characters look.”

“And now, the movie has come out at last, and apparently they’ve credited someone named Bob Macleod as co-creator,” he continued. “They couldn’t even be bothered to check the spelling of my name sometime in the last three years. And that can’t be fixed. That will be on the movie forever. I think I’m done with this movie.”

Have you seen The New Mutants? If so, what did you make of the movie and Boone’s casting choices? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Twentieth Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive. Directed by Josh Boone (“The Fault in our Stars”) and written by Josh Boone & Knate Lee, “The New Mutants” stars: Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”); Anya Taylor-Joy (“Glass”); Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”); Alice Braga (“Predators”); Blu Hunt (“The Originals”); and Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”). The film is produced by Simon Kinberg, p.g.a., Karen Rosenfelt  and Lauren Shuler Donner with Stan Lee and Michele Imperato Stabile serving as executive producers.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
