The Top 100 Your Sinclair ZX Spectrum Games: #88 – Wheelie

June 1, 2016 by Villordsutch

After yesterday’s movie tie-in Cobra we come to a tiny piece of originality which was was clearly created on some rampant cheese eating bing by some Eddie Kidd/Evil Kenevil fan.  We’ve arrived at Number #88 and it’s called Wheelie.

Published by Microsphere in 1983, the same software house behind the The Train Game which sat at Number #95, comes a rather excellent motorbike stunt game which finds you and your bike – the Zedexaki 500 – trapped in a series of caves.  Your actual goal is to find the Ghostrider (Not Nic Cage) at the far end of the cavern and race him out, however I generally never did this.  I found myself completing the numerous double-decker bus jumps, popping wheelies or attempting to stop myself just before I hit the many walls at high-speed.  Along the way you also had some minor inconveniences like bouncing hedgehogs and other whatnots but they where always easy to sneak past.

Wheelie looked and played rather fantastically, though looking back now after a few decades does suffer with some rather dubious flickering, especially in relation to our hero biker.  Though still, even with these issues, the animation still look rather impressive, especially when you completely mess up a double double-decker jump!
