The Week in Spandex – Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Agent Carter, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Gambit, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Arrow and more

January 10, 2015 by Gary Collinson

…After all the Sony leaks suggesting that the plans for the Spider-Man franchise were completely up in the air, it looked like the studio had finally decided the next step for the wall-crawler this week with a casting notice popping up for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which suggested both Andrew Garfield and Dane DeHaan would be back as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Harry Osborn / Green Goblin. However, the good news / bad news (depending on which side of the fence you fall on Sony’s handling of the series) is that the casting call appears to be a fake, so we’re still waiting to see what’s next for the wall-crawler…

…Moving on to Fox’s Marvel properties and it looks like director Tim Miller is starting to look to fill out the supporting cast for Ryan Reynolds’ solo debut as the Merc with the Mouth, with reports this week stating that T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) are both in talks to join Deadpool. Miller is reportedly in the frame for a character described as “an additional comic voice to compliment Deadpool”, while there’s talk that Skrein could be up for a villain…

…2016 is going to be a big year for Fox’s superhero ambitions, with the studio adding a third X-Men movie to its slate by giving an official release date of October 7th 2016 to the Channing Tatum-headlined Gambit movie, which now joins February’s Deadpool and May’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Meanwhile, the release date for the previously-announced The Fantastic Four 2 has been moved up a month and a half, and will now hit cinemas on June 2nd…

…Some new casting rumours have surfaced for X-Men: Apocalypse with regards to the roles of the younger Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm, with reports suggesting that Bryan Singer is looking at Taron Edgerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) Jamie Blackley (If I Stay) and Tye Sheridan (Mud) for Scott, Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) and Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) for Jean, and Alexandra Shipp (House of Anubis) and Zendaya Coleman (K.C. Undercover) for Storm…

…We are of course still waiting on our first look at the first Fantastic Four movie (which has now secured a composer in comic book movie regular Marco Beltrami, whose credits include Blade II, The Crow: Salvation, Hellboy, Jonah Hex, The Wolverine). Well, if rumours are to be believed, we might get a glimpse at the reboot during the Super Bowl, while it’s been reported – but not confirmed – that a trailer for the movie will be attached to Kingsman: The Secret Service on February 13th…

….And that may not be all we’ve got to look forward to in February, as the long-awaited first trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is rumoured to be attached to Warner Bros.’ Jupiter Ascending on February 6th. Just like it was rumoured to be attached to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. I’d say Mad Max: Fury Road would be a better shout, but WB has a habit of dropping its comic book movie trailers very early, and in all honesty, the Wachowskis’ sci-fi could probably do with the boost that a Batman v Superman trailer would bring, so we shall see…

…If you’re struggling to wait until 2016 for Batman v Superman, then you may be interested in a new rumour that’s emerged suggesting Warner Bros. is set to split the movie into two, with Batman v Superman Part I: Enter the Knight arriving on October 23rd of this year and Dawn of Justice on its original March 25 date next year. The rumour stems from an image allegedly from the film’s teaser trailer, but could just as easily – if not more easily – be fake, so don’t get your hopes up too much just yet…

…It had been rumoured, but now Viola Davis has confirmed she’s set to portray the character of Amanda Waller is David Ayer’s Suicide Squad: “I have not started reading [the comics] yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad… I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.” Production is expected to get underway in April, with Davis joining a cast that so far includes Will Smith (Hancock) as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne (Pan) as Enchantress, Jai Courtney (Terminator: Genisys) as Boomerang, Tom Hardy (The Drop) as Rick Flagg, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn…

…Click below to continue on for The Dark Knight Trilogy, Gotham, Constantine, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, LEGO Batman, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis and more…
