The Week in Spandex – Suicide Squad images galore, Justice League and The Flash casting, Batman’s kill count, Thor: Ragnarok begins filming, Gambit to shoot next year and more

July 9, 2016 by Gary Collinson

…With a year to go until the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland shared a new behind-the-scenes ‘Spidey-Selfie’ from the set of the film, giving us a new look at him in costume complete with webshooters [check it out here], while The Nice Guys actress Angourie Rice has become the latest addition to a cast that is giving Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead a run for their money when it comes to numbers…

…Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t the only Marvel movie now in production, as Marvel Studios’ co-president Louis D’Esposito has announced that cameras are rolling on the God of Thunder’s third solo outing Thor: Ragnarok. The film joins Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as part of Marvel’s big 2017 slate – the first time the studio has launched three movies in a single year…

…Hot Toys is revisiting 2013’s Iron Man 3 with a new collectible figure as part of the ‘House Party Protocol’ with a Toy Fair exclusive Iron Man Mk XXVII Disco figure; take a look at promotional images here…

…It looks like a new cast member for Marvel’s Iron Fist may have been revealed this week, with Bollywood actor and stuntman Sameer Ali Khan (Rock the Kasbah) seemingly revealing on social media that he’s joined the cast of the Netflix series, which is shooting now with Game of Thrones star Finn Jones in the title role of Danny Rand…

…Moving on to the X-Verse and producer Simon Kinberg has given an update on Fox’s X-Men schedule, as well as revealing that cameras will start rolling on the Channing Tatum-headlined Gambit movie in the Spring (well, until the next delay): “We’re figuring out [the schedule now]. The first thing up, we’re shooting the Wolverine movie right now and we start shooting Deadpool 2 at the beginning of next year, then I sit down and start writing the next one of the mainline X-Men movies real soon. We have a great script on [Gambit] and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year…”

…While we await some official news on the Deadpool sequel, Ryan Reynolds has taken to Twitter to share a rather fantastic fan-made teaser poster for the Merc with a Mouth’s upcoming sequel; take a look here…

…Disney’s animated superhero adventure Big Hero 6 has become the latest movie to get the Honest Trailer treatment from the folks at Screen Junkies; watch it here…

…And finally, we end on a sad note with the news that Noel Neill, the first actress ever to portray Lois Lane on screen, has passed away aged 95. Neil first portrayed the roving reporter in 1948’s Superman, before reprising the role for Atom Man vs. Superman in 1950, and the George Reeves TV series The Adventures of Superman. She also appeared in 1978’s Superman: The Movie as Lois’ mother Ella, as well as cameoing in an episode of the 80s Superboy series and playing Lex Luthor’s wife Gertrude Vanderworth in 2006’s Superman Returns.
