US Box Office Report – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 tops the charts on a very slow weekend

December 8, 2014 by admin

Your US Box Office Report for 5th – 7th December…

With virtually no competition, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has made it three weeks a the top of the US box office on a very slow winter weekend.

Adding another $21.6 million to its total, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 now sits at $257..7 million domestically. The film has also performed well Internationally having taken $302.8 million worldwide, giving the movie a global total of $560.5 million. However, it is still the lowest earner of the Hunger Games franchise by some margin and it will unlikely catch up with The Hunger Games ($691.2 million) or The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($864.9 million). Listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 using the player below:

Penguins of Madagascar retained the number two spot, adding another $11.1 million to its disappointing $49.5 million domestic total. Thankfully for 20th Centry Fox, the film has performed significantly better overseas, pulling in $93.8 million (65% of its total takings) for a worldwide total of $143.3 against a reported budget of $135 million. However, this has been the case with the entire Madagascar franchise. Baring a miracle, there is virtually no chance that Penguins of Madagascar will catch up with its Madagascar brothers in terms of domestic or global takings.

Horrible Bosses 2 was our only climber this week as it jumped from fifth to third, adding $8.6 million. The movie now sits on $36 million and is unlikely to beat the first movie’s domestic takings of $111 million. Big Hero 6 and Insterstellar stay in the top 5 for another week, taking $8.1 and $8 million respectively. The only new entry, The Pyramid, opened to $1.3 million to take ninth. You can listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review of Horrible Bosses 2 using the player below:

In other box office news, Gone Girl has now made it ten weeks inside the top 10, adding another $1.5 million to its $162.8 million total. Birdman stays in the top 10 once again, despite being shown on so few screens, and now sits on $18.9 million – taking it past its $18 million budget before its released worldwide. Other new entry Wild opened to $630k across just 21 screens – giving it an average of $30k per screen. Could this be another Birdman?

Here’s your top 10 and their domestic totals:
