Venom and Silver & Black directors talk Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs

July 20, 2017 by Gary Collinson

With Spider-Man: Homecoming riding high at the box office, Sony is ramping up its plans to expand the SpiderVerse with a range of spinoff movies, beginning with Venom and the Silver Sable/Black Cat movie Silver & Black.

During a piece over at Variety exploring Sony’s plans for its spinoff movies, Venom director Ruben Fleischer and Silver & Black’s Gina Prince-Bythewood have briefly spoken about their respective projects.

“I’ve always been drawn to the more antihero superheroes,” states Fleischer, who will begin shooting the R-rated Venom movie this September with Tom Hardy starring as Eddie Brock. “There’s a dark element to [Venom] and a wit that has always appealed to me. [Eddie and the symbiote] become almost a third being, which is what Venom is. There’s a famous quote: ‘You’re Eddie Brock. I’m the symbiote. Together we are Venom.’”

“I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive,” added Prince-Bythewood, revealing that she is taking inspiration from the likes of Thelma & Louise and Midnight Run as she looks to explore how Silver Sable became a killer for hire and why Black Cat is drawn to crime.

“With the Sony universe of Marvel characters, our mission is only to do what’s the absolute best for each individual property,” states Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch with regards to the studio’s plans. “I just want to honor the original DNA. Superhero movies have now transcended [the point] where they’re no longer superhero movies per se; they are essentially genre movies It’s not so much that characters have a cape and fly. In Silver & Black, these two women are modern and cool. … They may wear costumes, but [they’re] very real and very grounded.”
