Viola Davis confirms Amanda Waller role in Suicide Squad

January 7, 2015 by Gary Collinson

When the cast for Warner Bros. and director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was officially announced, there was one major role from the DC supervillain ensemble unfilled in Amanda Waller, the Director of A.R.G.U.S., and head of Task Force X.

Initial reports suggested that Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey were up for the part, with Latino-Review then stating that Davis had secured the role. Well, it looks like that report was on the money, as Davis has now confirmed to Nerd Report that she has signed on to the project, but is yet to start reading up on the character.

“I have not started reading [the comics] yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad… I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”

Suicide Squad will be released on August 5th 2016, with a cast that includes Will Smith (Hancock) as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne (Pan) as Enchantress, Jai Courtney (Terminator: Genisys) as Boomerang, Tom Hardy (The Drop) as Rick Flagg, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker , Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis (The Help) as Amanda Waller.
