Viola Davis set to play Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad

December 17, 2014 by Luke Owen

Originally published December 17, 2014. Updated July 3, 2023.

A couple of weeks back we reported the casting news for Suicide Squad now that the whole team is in place. But one name missing was the lady behind the team, Amanda Waller.

Well, according to Latino Review (who are hit and miss with their reports), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) is now the front runner for the role. It was previously reported that Oprah Winfrey (Selma) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) were also in the running, with Winfrey taking the lead, but  this new report seems to think however that Davis is a lock for the role.

Curiously though, Latino Review doesn’t mention whether Davis will be signed to a multi-picture deal, which could mean that Amanda Waller’s role in the DC Universe could be short lived.

Suicide Squad will be released on August 5th 2016 and directed by David Ayer (Fury) with a cast that includes Will Smith (Hancock) as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne (Pan) as Enchantress, Jai Courtney (Terminator: Genisys) as Boomerang, Tom Hardy (The Drop) as Rick Flagg, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn.
