WandaVision’s Matt Shakman to helm Star Trek 4 starring Chris Pine

July 14, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Prepare for another round on the Enterprise as Star Trek is heading back to the big screen, with Paramount tapping a new director for the latest entry in the movie series.

Deadline reports that Matt Shakman, the director behind the Emmy-nominated Disney+ series WandaVision, will helm a new Star Trek sequel. Further details are yet to be released, but Deadline notes “film will bring back the original cast, the one that Chris Pine heads.”

Reports say that production will begin next spring and sees Paramount and Bad Robot’s JJ Abrams returning to produce. The script will come from Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Beer is attached to a boatload of new projects, including a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a Pet Sematary prequel. Robertson-Dworet has story credits on Captain Marvel and teamed with Beer on the as-yet-unproduced Silver Sable for Sony Pictures.

Before Shakman got on board with Beer and Robertson, other projects which had been in contention for this next Star Trek film included Quentin Tarantino’s pitch by The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith, another by Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley, and a NuTrek sequel from writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones). All were shelved as Paramount looked to reassess its handling of the franchise.

This upcoming Star Trek sequel marks Shakman’s first major film outing. He previously worked in theatre before shifting to TV on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo, and Game of Thrones. Shakman then found himself as the EP and director on one of Marvel’s most successful projects ever with the hit series WandaVision, which received 23 Emmy nominations this week.
