Warner Bros. delays release of Wonder Woman 1984, In the Heights, Scoob! and Malignant

March 24, 2020 by EJ Moreno

It was only a matter of time, but Warner Bros. has officially delayed the release of their summer blockbuster Wonder Woman 1984, with the Gal Gadot-led superhero sequel now set to hit theaters on August 14th instead of June 6th.

“When we greenlit Wonder Woman 1984, it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on August 14th,” Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, said in a statement. “We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”

Director Patty Jenkins took to her Twitter to talk about the delay, pushing that the film is meant to be seen on the big screen, which goes with the rumors that the studio had been considering sending the sequel straight to streaming as opposed to a theatrical release..

We made Wonder Woman 1984 for the big screen and I believe in the power of cinema. In these terrible times, when theater owners are struggling as so many are, we are excited to re-date our film to August 14th 2020 in a theater near you, and pray for better times for all by then pic.twitter.com/85ykQ8x6NE

In these dark and scary times, I am looking forward to a brighter future ahead. Where we can share the power of cinema together again. Excited to redate our WW84 film to August 14, 2020. I hope everyone is safe. Sending my love to you all. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/nzPUM7uQ1n

Along with the Wonder Woman 1984 delay,  the adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical, In The Heights, has been pulled from the schedule indefinitely, as has the animated film Scoob! and Malignant, a thriller from Aquaman director James Wan. This should come as no surprise to anyone as the Coronavirus outbreak has halted almost every major release, as well as closed down cinemas around the globe.

Wonder Woman 1984 reunites Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins with stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Ewen Bremner (Charlie), Said Taghmaoui (Sameer), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe), Doutzen Kroes (Venelia) and new additions Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as Maxwell Lord, and Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon), Ravi Patel (Master of None, Grandfathered) and Gabriella Wilde (Doctor Who, Poldark) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
