Zack Snyder wants to scale back his style for his next film

August 4, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Zack Snyder is a filmmaker who loves excess, but now it seems he’s heading into his minimalist era. After helming two explosive blockbusters for Netflix with Rebel Moon, Snyder wants to scale things back, as he expresses in a new interview with Reel Blend.

During the conversation, Snyder tells the outlet that what he’s currently cooking up will be a toned-back project compared to his recent work. The filmmaker explains: “I’m trying to do a small movie right now. I’m not going to say what it is, but I was, like, can I just do a movie without any visual effects in it for like five minutes? Then, I’ll go back to the insanity. That’s what we’re trying to do right now.”

“I’m supposed to be writing this little movie, and that’s kind of what I want to do,” he adds. “There’s a few things, a couple original ideas, a couple of IPs, you know, there’s a few things that we have that are very ‘real’ that we’re just trying to lock in now.”

Snyder’s latest release is the Director’s Cut of Rebel Moon, now streaming on Netflix. Meanwhile, he also has the animated series Twilight of the Gods heading to the streamer in September [watch the trailer here].

Delve further into the mythology and madness of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi saga in the viciously sexier, bloodier world of Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a new army of heroes is formed.

The cast of Rebel Moon includes Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins, Staz Nair, Fra Fee, Cleopatra Coleman, Stuart Martin, Ingvar Sigurðsson, Alfonso Herrera, Cary Elwes, Rhian Rees, Elise Duffy, Jena Malone, Sky Yang, Charlotte Maggi, Corey Stoll.
