Zack Snyder’s new “Akira Kurosawa-inspired” sci-fi film Rebel Moon heading to Netflix

July 7, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Zack Snyder is re-teaming with Netflix for an all-new intergalactic adventure. Snyder’s next project will an epic sci-fi fantasy titled Rebel Moon.

The Hollywood Report broke the today that the filmmaker will co-write, produce, and direct Rebel Moon for Netflix. Snyder is co-writing the script with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. Snyder and Johnstad will receive story by credit.

This project marks the second collaboration between Snyder and Netflix as they previously worked on the 2021 zombie-action film Army of the Dead. The film was viewed by 72 million people in its first four weeks, according to Netflix.

For Rebel Moon, Snyder is pulling from the iconic filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. He will also tackle a Star Wars-like story, a type of film the filmmaker has reportedly wanted to make for some time.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

As per THR, the story for Rebel Moon is “set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”
