Anthony Russo talks Captain America 3, confirms return of The Winter Soldier

August 27, 2014 by Gary Collinson

During an interview for the home-entertainment release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, co-director Anthony Russo spoke about the status of Steve Rogers’ next outing in 2016’s Captain America 3, confirming that Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier will be returning alongside Chris Evans, and that the relationship between Bucky and Steve will “form one layer of the next movie.”

“The relationship between Cap and the Winter Soldier was never resolved at the end of the last movie,” Russo tells Movies.com “Thinking about where that relationship can go is a piece of the puzzle for us for sure. That character is a wonderfully, beautifully tragic figure in the sense of is he the world’s most feared assassin or is he the world’s longest serving POW. Is he innocent by reason of insanity or the equivalent of it because he’s been mind controlled or is he irredeemable? Is he ever going to be acceptable to Cap again as the friend that he used to be before he was the Winter Soldier? These are very philosophical, emotional questions that pique our interest and definitely form one layer of the next movie.”

Meanwhile, following the recent comments from Jeremy Renner suggesting that Hawkeye may feature in Captain America 3, Russo went on to tease the inclusion of other big name characters from the MCU, stating that: “We just got another incredible draft from the writers and are very excited about the film. I can’t divulge who is going to be in the film, but I think the fans are going to freak out when they hear about it.”

Are you glad that The Winter Soldier will be returning for Captain America 3, and which other characters would you like to see appearing?
