Disney eyes an Oz The Great and Powerful sequel

March 8, 2013 by admin

With Oz The Great and Powerful hitting cinemas today (read our review here), Variety are reporting that Disney are planning on returning to the world again for a sequel with Mitchell Kapner (who wrote the first film) hired to start work.

The movie is looking to make around $80 million this weekend State side so it should come as no shock that Disney want to head back down the Yellow Brick Road. The literary source material, penned by L. Frank Baum, is in the public domain however Mitchell will not be able to use any of the imagery from the Warner Bros 1939 classic – so perhaps we’ll see a remake of the utterly terrifying Return to Oz?

Flickering Myth staff writer Scott Davis gave a ★★★ ★ review and said that Oz the Great and Powerful is ‘a fantastic achievement, full of wonder, enchantment and warmth. Beautifully realised in all its 3D glory, and ably supported by some great talent at the top of their game, it’s a tremendous homage/reinvigoration of the Oz stories, and one that will captivate all ages.’ Read the full review here.

Oz the Great and Powerful stars James Franco (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Mila Kunis (Ted), Michelle Williams (Dawson’s Creek), Rachel Weisz (The Mummy)and Zach Braff (Scrubs) with Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man trilogy) in the director’s chair.
