Mark Wahlberg would like to be the next Iron Man

Although there was some uncertainty earlier this year about Robert Downey Jr. extending his time as Tony Stark once his contract expired with the release of Iron Man 3, Marvel Studios managed to secure the fan favourite for another two outings as Iron Man by offering a bumper pay day for him to reprise the role for The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3. However, that hasn’t stopped Mark Wahlberg from expressing his interest in the role if and when Downey finally decides it’s time to hang up the armor.

“I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey,” said Wahlberg during a promotional interview for another comic book movie, the action comedy 2 Guns [read our review here]. “But it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked. Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in Batman Forever. Somebody dodged a bullet!”

Of course, with Downey set to continue in the role until 2018 (presumably) at the earliest, there’s still a while to go yet before yet we need to mentioning possible replacements, but how would you feel about Wahlberg taking on the role of the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist?
