Kevin Smith confirms Dark Knight Returns Batsuit for Batman vs. Superman

May 20, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Exactly a week ago today, Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder unveiled the new Batsuit as worn by Ben Affleck in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman, although with the first look image being black and white, we were left wondering what colour scheme costume designer Michael Wilkinson’s take on the cape and cowl had adopted. Black? Black and grey? Blue and grey? Well, we need not wonder any longer, as Kevin Smith has confirmed that Snyder has drawn upon Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns for his take on the Caped Crusader:

“As you may remember, I saw a photo of the Batsuit many months ago, and many people asked online, ‘Is that the picture you saw?’ No, that is a very cool picture, but that is not the picture I saw,” states Smith on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast (via Comic Book). “They put it on a fake rooftop, and they lit it up. But it was in color, and you could see every piece of detail. So I’ve seen some people online go, ‘Why is this f***ing suit any different than the Chris Nolan Batsuit, it’s all one f***ing color.’ It’s like, ‘Dude, that’s a monochrome photo. You know what that means, one chrome.” Smith went on to talk about the “That’s not a representation of what the suit looks like,” continued Smith. “So what the suit looks like, and I was always kind of keeping it quiet until they revealed it, but they’ve revealed it. And you can kind of see, and anybody that…you’ve seen some people take the picture and color it online. If you want to see what this f***ing suit looks like, you just go to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, go to the third book, Hunt the Dark Knight…it’s the exact f***ing outfit he’s wearing. That’s why I hugged that guy all those months ago.”

Batman vs. Superman is set for release on May 6th 2016 with Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent) and Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Holly Hunter (The Piano), Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), and Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
