Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy has reached another box office milestone this weekend, overtaking the domestic box office hauls of 2008’s Iron Man ($318.3 million) as well as fellow franchise starters Transformers ($319.1 million) and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. ($317.6 million) and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ($314.2 million) with $319.2 million to date.
Globally, Guardians has pulled in $644.3 million, leaving it just half a million short of Thor: The Dark World’s $644.8 million, which would make it the fourth-highest grossing instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a Chinese release still to come on October 10th, there’s still a good chance that Guardians will hit the $700 million mark, which would make it the fourth superhero movie of the year to do so after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomman Dey, Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael and Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3) as Thanos.
