Avengers 3 might leave out Captain America and Thor

October 6, 2014 by Robert Kojder

According to Badass Digest, there is a strong chance that Avengers 3 may swap out staple characters Captain America and Thor (and possibly Black Widow) for fresher Marvel Cinematic Universe characters such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. The believed primary reason is that in addition to director Joss Whedon wanting to shake things up, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth have contracts that are about to expire. This means that Marvel likely sees the third chapter of The Avengers as an opportunity to familiarize audiences with some new blood. Other characters that could see a larger focus are Doctor Strange, Ant-Man and Ms. Marvel.

While a popular theory is that one of the heroes will die, it seems more likely that Marvel will treat their absence seriously and use them as a return in an even larger capacity. We recently reported that Avengers 3 could be split into two films, but apparently Marvel is using the film to segue into an even broader project that would see the return of, you guessed it, Captain America and Thor.

Something else to keep in mind is that after the success of Guardians Of The Galaxy – a project many thought would actually fail due to its lack of brand recognition and general weirdness – Marvel may feel that they may not have to keep contracting bigger names for insane amounts of money. Guardians of the Galaxy has the fourth-largest worldwide box office take of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while it cost a large sum of money to produce, it doesn’t star actors anywhere near as huge as someone like Robert Downey Jr.

In the meantime, Avengers: Age Of Ultron is set for release on May 1st, 2015.
