More from James Spader on his role as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron

October 27, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Following the release of the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, James Spader offered up a few thoughts on his role as the AI antagonist of the hotly-anticipated sequel, and now we have a few more comments from The Blacklist star as he touches on bringing the villain to life via motion capture…

“When you first meet Ultron, his physicality is very different to what he evolves to. It was in the script but we arrived at the metamorphosis of him on the set. In practice, in rehearsals … We were able to create the physicality of the character on the motion-capture stage. They would dot me up and I was wearing a helmet that had two cameras on my face, and they could live stream it to a monitor so we could try different things. Then I’d go and shoot the scene with the other actors and they’re recording all of it, including my voice. 9 times out of 10 they were not using ADR (additional dialogue recording) after the fact.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release in the UK on April 24th 2015 and North America on May 1st 2015 with Joss Whedon directing a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Paul Bettany (JARVIS / The Vision), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), James Spader (Ultron), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Strucker), and Josh Brolin (Thanos).
