Interstellar tops Friday box office with $17 million, Big Hero 6 still set for weekend win

November 8, 2014 by Alfie Nobes

Both Interstellar and Big Hero 6 have had huge debuts at the box office, hauling in a whopping combined sum of over $30 million in the states this Friday. Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar is currently sitting in first place with $17 million while Big Hero 6 trails slightly behind on $15.8 million.  Hope is not entirely lost for the Disney animation, which is predicted to win the weekend, bringing in $56 million after the extra family business on Saturday.

With Interstellar still set to hit $51 million, this weekend could mark only the fourth time in movie history that two films have opened with over $50 million.  June 2013 was the last time it occurred when Monster’s University and World War Z both hit the $50 million mark.

With a cast sporting stars such as Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine it is no surprise the galactic adventure has been so succesful, and after the success of Disney’s Frozen it almost feels like the kings of family films can’t fail.
