US Box Office Report – Dumb and Dumber To beats Big Hero 6 and Interstellar with $38 million

November 16, 2014 by Luke Owen

Your US Box Office Report for 14th – 16th November 2014…

After a blockbuster weekend last week with the top two movies taking over $50 million each, things were a touch quieter this week. But the new boy in town beat out last week’s super hits with Dumb and Dumber To taking the number one spot.

The comedy sequel, which sees Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles from 20 years ago, took an impressive $38 million from 3,154 screens – an average of $12k per screening. Even adjusted for inflation, Dumb and Dumber To has taken $7 million more than its predecessor despite a lot of trepidation about its release and middling reviews. But the release success of this story is that Dumb and Dumber To was shown on less screens than both the second and third spots.

Having opened to a whopping $56 million last week, Disney’s Big Hero 6 dropped just 35% to take $36 million over the weekend (from 3,77,3 screens), giving it a domestic total of $111.6 million. With an extra $36 million from foreign markets, Big Hero 6 currently sits at $148 million – meaning it’s just shy of its $165 million budget before it even hits the UK next year. Last week’s number two Interstellar dropped to third this week with $29 million from 3,561 screens, giving it a domestic total of $97.8 million. However, the movie has done spectacularly well overseas with a worldwide total of $321.9 million. With that said, it looks unlikely that the movie won’t reach the heights of Inception, The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Rises.

The only other new entry was Beyond the Lights which, despite just taking $6.5 million, landed in fourth with the rest of the Top 10 dropping between 25-40% from the previous week. Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, continues to sore (even managing the Top 10) taking $2.4 million from just 857 screens. With the movie yet to open in foriegn markets, it could still turn a profit from its $18 million budget.

Here’s your top 10 and their domestic totals:
