Your US box office report for 7th – 9th November 2014…
Last weekend, the entire release of movies managed to do around $94 million. This week, that number was eclipsed by the top two with both Big Hero 6 and Interstellar taking over $50 million each.
It was rumoured earlier in the week that Disney’s latest animated movie Big Hero 6 would top the US box office, despite claims to the contrary from fans of Christopher Nolan. But not only did Big Hero 6 win the weekend, it won so defiantly. Based on a Marvel comic, Big Hero 6 took a whopping $56 .2 million over the weekend domestically and an extra $23 million worldwide. But even with this big of a weekend opening, it falls behind live action counterparts Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 and The Avengers.
But even with the preview-day bump (and taking the Friday), Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar came in second this week with $50 million ($52 million overall). Also released in several major territories including the UK, the sci-fi epic has taken an impressive $132.1 million worldwide. Said to be his riskiest movie to date, Interstellar does fall short behind the opening weekends of The Dark Knight, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, but does beat Batman Begins and The Prestige. It also falls short of Gravity‘s opening weekend, which was released around the same time last year.
Not much else to report from the rest of the top 10. Gone Girl climbs to third despite now in its sixth week in release with $6.1 million, last week’s number one Ouija fell to fourth with $6 million and St. Vincent rose to fifth with $5.7 million. Nightcrawler (which was thought to be last week’s number one but just fell short) dropped to sixth with $5.5 million while Fury also fell to seventh also with $5.5 million. Birdman also continues to impress (despite coming in twelfth overall) with $2.3 million from just 462 screens, an average of $4,978 per showing.
