Your US Weekend Box Office Report for 31st October – 2nd November 2014…
Despite it being the weekend for scary movies, it was Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler that topped the US Box Office charts – just squeaking over a victory over last week’s number one Ouija. However, it was a very slow weekend for the box office, which was down 25% on the same weekend last year.
The debut movie from Dan Gilroy shot to the number one spot after rave reviews from pretty much everyone (including three five star reviews here at Flickering Myth) with a fairly decent $10.9 million. On any other weekend, this probably would have seen Nightcrawler take the number two or three, but with the box office numbers being much lower this weekend, it took advantage for the top prize.
Falling second to Nightcrawler was last week’s number one Ouija, which despite being shown on more screens and having taken $20 million last weekend, fell just $9,000 short of making it two weeks at the number one spot. This weekend’s $10.9 now means that Ouija has a domestic total of $34.9 million and a worldwide total of $42.6 million. It looks as though not even the Halloween weekend could save the movie from the terrible reviews it’s had, but costing just $5 million to make means Universal probably won’t be too upset.
Last week’s number two John Wick fell to sixth this week with $8 million while Fury remained in 3rd ($9.1 million), Gone Girl stayed in 4th ($8.8 million) and The Book of Life retained 5th ($8.3 million). Gone Girl has now made it five weeks in the top five with a total domestic gross of $136.6 million, making it the third most successful movie of David Fincher’s career behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Seven.
This week’s biggest success story was Birdman starring Michael Keaton which made an impressive $2.5 million despite being shown on only 231 screens, an average of $10,000 per screen. Sadly for fans of the Saw franchise however, the 10th anniversary screening of the movie made only $650,000 from more than 2,000 screens. Looks like the option to buy the movie for $10 on Blu-Ray really didn’t help it.
