Oscar Isaac comments on being cast as Apocalypse

December 5, 2014 by Gavin Logan

Not only can Oscar Isaac be seen piloting an X-wing in next years Star Wars: The Force Awakens but he has also recently been cast in another big blockbuster as the titular villain in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse due out in May 2016.

Isaac recently spoke to MTV at the Gotham Independent Films Awards about being cast as En Sabah Nur – the world’s first mutant – and stated that he “was really into Apocalypse”. Isaac mentioned that he first started reading comics in the mid 80’s and that X-Factor was his favourite. X-Factor features the first five original X-Men; Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey & Iceman and also debuted Apocalypse. Later versions also featured Quicksilver, Havok, Mystique and Sabretooth.

He continued “…so I read that story, with Archangel and Apocalypse. I was also obsessed with the Book of Revelation a bit, I was a weird kid, so anything that referenced the second coming, or the rapture, or anything like that…so when I found out they were interested in me for it, I was really excited about it.”

When he was was asked about the look of Apocalypse, Issac replied “No…haven’t got into that yet, but I’m excited to hear what they have to say.”

Isaac then went into a little more detail during a chat with IGN, stating that: “In the early conversations we talked a lot about that [Apocalypse’s distinct point of view and agenda]. Of course, you read the comic book, and [Apocalypse is] not so shaded with gray — except his face. [Laughs] That’s the only thing gray about him. Just as Bryan’s done with the other films, I think he seeks to find something a little more interesting than the archetypal aspects of the characters, which work really well in print, but for a film I think you want to see a bit more of the — for lack of a better word — humanity in [Apocalypse]; because ultimately this is a story about humans. It’s just different symbols for different things that we feel, so with this character I am incredibly interested in the challenge of finding someone that’s psychologically interesting and compelling, and actually the spiritual aspects of the character.”

X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release May 19th, 2016 with James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) all confirmed to return.
