Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice choreographer talks fight scenes, promises they will be better than The Dark Knight

January 20, 2015 by admin

With rumours floating around the Internet that the first trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be hitting the world next month (attached to Jupiter Ascending), the wait to see The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel square off is almost upon us.  But how will the fight go down?

“Warner Bros., they are very strict, so I can’t say much, but it’s no surprise if I say Batman and Superman come face-to-face in the movie,” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice choreographer Guillermo Grispo told Los Andes Diario (translated by Batman News). “It’s one of the most important sequences and I was actively involved in the design of the fight: the exchange of punches and the physical movement were put together with my partner Ryan Watson.”

“There’s a thought that Batman has no chance, that [Superman] will squash him like a bug,” he continues. “But when you see the movie, and how it all comes out, there’s a very intelligent explanation as to why they would have a first-hand confrontation though it seems to be totally to Batman’s disadvantage.”

Grispo very nearly worked on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, but was unable to due to contract disputes. When asked about the style of fighting we can expect from The Batman, Grispo promises us that it will be bigger and better than what has come before.

“Now Batman is going to fight the way I’ve always dreamed seeing him fight… he’s a character so prepared in martial arts that you can do a lot of things with him, but filmmakers usually don’t go all the way with it,” he said. “Even in the last Nolan movies the action scenes are not very good from a technical, martial arts point of view to things like choreography, filming, bad camera movements… But hey, don’t get me wrong, Nolan is great, my hat’s off to him. He makes fascinating stories, but I think that he did not pay too much attention to the fights. Those are the kind of details that Zack [Snyder], being so physical himself, loves preparing. I think there’s going to be a big difference when you see these Batman fights in comparison to the previous ones.”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice sees Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Harry Lennix (General Swanwick) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Holly Hunter (The Piano), Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) and Scoot McNairy (Argo) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
