The third instalment in The Hunger Games franchise has just overtaken Marvel’s space opera Guardians of the Galaxy to become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2014, with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 having now pulled in $333.2 million since its release in November. This marks the first time ever that two entries from the same franchise has topped the U.S. box office in two consecutive years, and the first time the same studio has achieved that feat since records began in 1982.

Worldwide, Mockingjay – Part 1 remains the sixth biggest film of 2014 behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714.1 million), X-Men: Days of Future Past ($748.1 million), Maleficent ($757.8 million), Guardians ($772.8 million) and Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.087 billion).
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Meta Golding, Jena Malone, Stef Dawson, Natalie Dormer, Lily Rabe, Jeffrey Wright, Evan Ross, Mahershala Ali, Wes Chatham, Eldon Henson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Julianne Moore.
