Joss Whedon on why Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was cut from Avengers: Age of Ultron

May 1, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back in November, Idris Elba let slip that he’d shot a scene for Avengers: Age of Ultron alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. However, Hiddleston was absent from the cast list on the subsequent poster, and as it turned out, the God of Mischief was nowhere to be seen in the final film either.

Well, director Joss Whedon has now confirmed that Hiddleston was indeed set to appear in the blockbuster sequel, but ultimately the decision was made to leave his scene on the cutting room floor:

“We shot something but it didn’t play,” Whedon tells MTV. “The movie has so much. It’s so filled. We didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understand the decision that there were now too many voices in the chorus. At some point, the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing.”

If you were disappointed that Loki was absent from Avengers: Age of Ultron, then fear not as he’ll be back on the big screen in 2017 for Thor: Ragnarok, and it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see him popping up somewhere in the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.
