Over the past few days Empire Magazine has been treating us to a variety of Suicide Squad images, giving us a new look at the majority of the members of Task Force X, as well as Jared Let’s Joker [keep up to date with all the images here]. Now we have some comments from director David Ayer, who describes the supervillain team-up as “the Comic Book Movie 2.0.”
“You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from fucking Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock,” Ayer tells Empire (via CBM) “And who the f*ck cares? But you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been shit on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline… that’s not so bad… I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0.”
Meanwhile, producer Charles Roven revealed how Suicide Squad came about, adding that: “We’d just started shooting Batman v Superman, we were figuring out our path through the expanding DC Justice League universe. Then David Ayer came and pitched his take on Suicide Squad. It had this darkness and edge, while still tonally in the zone of what we’re trying to do with these movies. And it’s impossible that you could get a big tentpole picture from pitch to start of principal photography and faster than we did.”

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th 2016 and sees David Ayer (Fury) directing a cast that includes Will Smith (Focus) as Deadshot, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Terminator Genisys) as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis (The Help) as Amanda Waller, Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns) as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World) as Killer Croc, Ray Olubowale (Resident Evil: Afterlife) as King Shark, Jay Hernandez (Hostel) as El Diablo, Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers) as Slipknot, Jim Parrack (Fury) as Johnny Frost, Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project) as Hugo Strange, newcomer Karen Fukuhara as Katana, and Common (Selma) and Scott Eastwood (The Longest Ride) in as-yet-unconfirmed roles. Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) also appears in some form in the film as Batman.
