Matthew McConaughey eyed for Stephen King’s The Dark Tower

Matthew McConaughey’s next project may be a film adaptation of a classic Stephen King series, as the actor has reportedly been offered a role in Sony and MRC’s The Dark Tower. 

The Wrap and Variety state that the film will be based on The Gunslinger, the first volume in King’s series, but both sources provide different information about the part McConaughey is up for in the much-delayed film. The Wrap suggests that the actor has been offered the role of gunslinger Roland Deschain, while Variety says he’s wanted to play demonic sorcerer and main antagonist Walter Padick, otherwise known as the Man in Black. The former also pointed out that neither the studio nor McConaughey are committed as of now, but both are interested in “striking a deal.”

Over the past couple of years, the actor has been on a major winning streak, starring in such financially successful and critically acclaimed projects as Mud, Magic Mike, Dallas Buyers Club (which earned him an Oscar for Best Actor), The Wolf of Wall Street, True Detective and Interstellar. 

If he does end up in the Dark Tower adaptation, it will only be the newest addition to the actor’s already busy schedule, considering that he is already set to appear in a number of 2016 films that include Gold, The Free State of Jones, Kubo and the Two Strings and Sing.  

Additionally, it was revealed recently that McConaughey decided to pass on playing the main villain in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2; although he has expressed interest in taking a role in a superhero film, it may be a while until he finds one that adequately fits him. 

Nikolaj Arcel is attached to direct The Dark Tower, which is due out on January 13, 2017. He has also penned the script for the film along with Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. Lastly, MRC is also working on a complimentary TV show based on the book series at the moment.
