Confirmed: Wolverine 3 will be rated R

May 9, 2016 by James Garcia

Now that Deadpool has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, and has even surpassed the domestic box office numbers of a film like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s hard to believe that it was ever considered a risky move for 20th Century Fox. That move has, obviously, payed off in spades (and continues to do so, now that Deadpool has become Fox’s highest grossing film on digital – ever), and has finally given Fox the courage to take the R-rated plunge with one of its more central characters: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

Once Deadpool came out, rumour broke that Jackman’s upcoming mutant swan song, Wolverine 3, would also come with an R-rating. That rumour has now been confirmed by producer Simon Kinberg.

Collider got the chance to speak with Kinberg while doing press for X-Men: Apocalypse (which will feature another Wolverine cameo), and asked him about several rumours for the film, including one regarding an appearance by Patrick Stewart. While Kinberg expertly avoided that particular plot point, he did confirm the shiny new R-rating:

“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

Fans have long been hoping that Wolverine would get a chance to bloody his claws, so it’s exciting to hear that the studio is letting director James Mangold go all out for this last Wolverine outing. Kinberg also confirms that filming has already begun, so hopefully more plot details will be revealed soon.

Wolverine 3 also stars Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle, and Elise Neal. It will claw its way into theaters on March 3, 2017.
