Star Trek 2… The Trouble with Tribbles and Taliban Klingons?

November 17, 2011 by admin

According to an unsubstantiated rumour, J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel to his 2009 reboot Star Trek could be turning to a classic villain from the franchise’s history and no – we’re not talking about Khan Noonien Singh. Here’s what ThinkMcFlyThink have to say…

“From what we’ve heard the Klingons play a prominent role in Star Trek 2. The angle, according to our sources, plays up them up as a Nomadic sect of warrior aliens causing trouble for the Federation – think an intergalactic Taliban with their home-planet overrun by Tribbles. Yes, those Tribbles, here in the newly rebooted continuity viewed as ‘furry carnivorous creatures.’“

‘Furry carnivorous creatures’? Wait a minute – isn’t that Critters? And Taliban-type Klingons?? I suppose it’s plausible(ish), but we should probably take this one with a rather heavy dose of salt for the time being. Still, the Klingons are surely due to make their debut in the rebooted timeline and it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if the loveable furballs also made an appearance somehow, even if it’s just for some light relief (a nod to their first appearance in the classic season two episode The Trouble with Tribbles, perhaps?). And they were always said to be mortal enemies of the Klingons…

Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Cowboys & Aliens) are currently busy working on the third draft of the script for the ‘Untitled Star Trek Sequel‘ with Damon Lindelof (Prometheus) and filming is expected to commence on January 15th ahead of a release some time in 2013. Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Bones), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), John Cho (Sulu), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) are all confirmed as returning, while recent rumours have suggested that Benicio Del Toro is being lined up for a role as a villain.
