Ben Wheatley to direct Doctor Who episodes

It is of course a landmark year for Doctor Who, with the Time Lord celebrating his 50th anniversary with a range of programming including the upcoming special The Day of the Doctor starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt, before Smith hands things over to the Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi with this year’s Christmas Special. Well, it’s now been announced that British filmmaker Ben Wheatley (A Field in England) will take charge of Capaldi’s first two Who adventures…

“I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who,” says Wheatley, whose other credits include Down Terrace, Kill List and Sightseers as well as the Johnny Vegas series Ideal. “I’ve been a fan since childhood. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.”

Series 8 of NuWho is set to begin on the BBC in August 2014.
