Roberto Orci says Star Trek 3 will take place in deep space during the Five-Year Mission

June 27, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Now that Roberto Orci has secured the director’s chair and Paramount has set a 2016 release date, development on the third instalment of the studio’s rebooted Star Trek series is moving up to full impulse power, and during a chat with the Humans From Earth podcast, Orci has spoken briefly about the threequel, stating that the story will take place in deep space during the crew’s five-year mission…

“In [Star Trek Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.”

We’re still waiting on an exact release date for Star Trek 3, as well as official casting announcements, although it’s assumed that Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Checkov) will all be back for the third outing.
