Star Trek 3 reportedly titled Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba set for a “kick-ass” role

April 22, 2015 by Gary Collinson

According to fansite TrekMovie.com, which has a solid track record when it comes to Star Trek, the upcoming third movie in Paramount Pictures’ relaunched series is going by the title of Star Trek Beyond.

According to the site, Star Trek Beyond has been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), although the report does go on to state that it could be a decoy title, given Bad Robot’s penchant for secrecy.

Little is known about the plot for Star Trek 3, although Simon Pegg – who is co-writing the script, as well as reprising the role of Soctty – has previously stated that it will have “the spirit of the TV show”, and an increased emphasis on exploration.

Meanwhile, speaking to MTV, Pegg has also confirmed that Idris Elba is set for a “kick-ass” role, stating that: “It will be [an original character]. This is the five-year mission now, we’re out there. We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people…It’s a massive universe. So we’re gonna try and reflect that in the movie.”

Star Trek 3 is set for release on July 8th, 2016, with Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) directing a cast that includes Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) alongside new additions Idris Elba (Thor: The Dark World) and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service).
