UPDATE: Avengers: Infinity War to feature 67 Marvel characters

January 12, 2016 by Gary Collinson

If you think Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is cramming the characters in, then just wait until Avengers: Infinity War…

During an appearance at Wizard World New Orleans, Captain America: Civil War helmers Anthony and Joe Russo were discussing their work on the upcoming two-part Marvel epic, when Joe touched upon the enormous cast of characters:

“We have so many characters we’re dealing with. We’re breaking ground on Avengers: Infinity War. We have a board with 67 characters on it.”

SEE ALSO: Avengers: Infinity War has a reported budget of $1 billion

It’s long been assumed that Avengers: Infinity War will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, although the Russos stopped short of confirming that over the weekend. Nevertheless, with 67 characters, the real question seems to be ‘which Marvel characters won’t appear?’.

UPDATE: The Russos have now clarified their comments to Collider, stating that they weren’t referring to 67 lead characters:

“We were being figurative when we said [67 characters] and people took it as literal but there’s a lot of characters. Infinity War is meant to be the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point. It’s very ambitious in its scope, it wants to take everythign that you’ve seen before and coalesce into some kinda of climactic ending. It’s complicated , ambitious storytelling…We’re not talking about lead characters, just people that make an appearance.”

Avengers: Infinity War – Part I is set for release on May 2nd 2018, followed by Avengers: Infinity War – Part II on May 3rd, 2019.
