Zootopia hits $800 million worldwide, highest-grossing movie of 2016 to date

April 6, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Disney animated hit Zootopia (or Zootropolis, here in the UK) has continued its fine run at the box-office, having overtaken 20th Century Fox’s superhero smash Deadpool this week to become the highest-grossing movie of 2016.

Zootopia has amassed a hefty $800 million and is still performing well, particularly in China where it has become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time with $222 million and counting. The film has earned a two week extension in Chinese cinemas, and is also due to open in Japan on April 23rd.

“The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised ofhabitatneighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together — a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery.”
